How to Build a Home Gym: On a Budget

Creating a workout space in the comfort of your home that is both inviting and will enable you to be challenged can be a difficult task.

While everyone has different workout preferences, I do believe there are some staple items that you should try to include in your home gym.

1.Dumbbells or adjustable dumbbells

Dumbbells are at the top of the list for a reason. And if you can afford it, adjustable dumbbells are even more ideal. Having the option to use a heavy set and light set of dumbbells can take your workout from minimal to maximal intensity and effort.

2. Resistance bands

Resistance bands, both long and short, covered or not, all have the ability to serve a purpose in your home gym. No matter your fitness level or your level of experience, resistance bands can be perfect for both the beginner and advanced lifter.

3. An adjustable bench

You may be wondering why an adjustable bench specifically. With an adjustable bench the number of exercises you can do in the comfort of your home increases as your ability to move in different planes and ranges of motions increases.

4. Some form of cardio (treadmill, bike, rower, etc.)

Depending on your location and environment, you may be able to walk, run, hike, ride your bike, and do other outdoor activities year round. However, living somewhere like midwest America presents you with many obstacles during certain times of year when it comes to getting your cardio training in. If you’re not wanting to invest in a gym membership and be able to do cardio exercise in the comfort of your home, picking a piece of cardio equipment to keep in your home can be quite the challenge. My recommendation is to pick a cardio equipment you know you won’t get tired of doing.

5. A jump rope

A jump rope could technically be classified as cardio equipment. But I want to keep it separate because while it not only provides cardiovascular benefits, jump roping can also be seen as being a full body workout improving strength, coordination, and bone density.

Some of these items are very affordable on their own even when purchased brand new, such as the resistance bands and a jump rope. There are a few items on this list however that aren’t quite as affordable. So how are you supposed to build a home gym without breaking the bank and spending thousands of dollars?

Well to start, the beauty of gym equipment is it can always be updated for something newer. So when you’re starting out, don’t worry about getting the shiny barbells and dumbbells or fresh out of the box cardio equipment. Turn to Facebook Marketplace, garage sales, and clearance items from places like Walmart, Target, and Amazon!

To build the home gym of your dreams, on a budget, is going to take time and patience. Again, equipment can always be added or upgraded later. Don’t be afraid to just start looking and slowly building the home gym of your dreams.
